ANTIGONE - METAMORFOSI DI UN MITO con Tiziana Irti

Certain ancient stories come to us intact because they tell our own stories, our very personal and private stories. They are tales that withstand the passage of time, remain alive and renew themselves, even after more than 2500 years, in the people who empathize with them.

The theatrical text Antigone, metamorphosis of a myth is drawn from the book Antigone a Scampia by Serena Gaudino, the result of work she conducted with a group of women from Scampia.

For an entire year, Serena Gaudino met with about fifty women from the Neapolitan neighborhood and told and read them the tragedy of Antigone, intertwining it with the cycle of Oedipus and Seven Against Thebes. At the end of the journey, echoing the myth, the women, identifying with Antigone and feeling that story close to their own, began to tell their own stories and reflect on their own condition.

The author experimented with the relevance that still pervades the Greek myth and put into practice what Simone Weil repeatedly wrote: the great Greek poetry is capable of speaking to the hearts of people and prompting them to reflect on their life conditions.

The staging arises from the need to address especially the youth with this experience and to show them how much correspondence there is between the stories of myths and life today. Contemporary stories intertwine with the myth and confront it, offering insights to reflect on the gigantic dramas that mankind faces today, often forced to choose between "the law of the gods and the law of men, between the law of love and the law of the State."
