The show narrates the restless and tormented life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Sissi. The text unfolds in various scenes, each examining different aspects of the Empress's character and thoughts: from philosophy to sex, from politics to art. The overall portrait that gradually emerges highlights a woman as unconventional as she is deeply frustrated by the rigidity and ruthlessness of the Viennese Court, yet also reveals the great poetry and longing for freedom of a creature who considered herself eternally "caged". Anorexic, perpetually grieving the absurd deaths of two of her children, she develops a sensitivity that is both painful and angry, yet anything but abstract, as it also extends to the most delicate social issues: from the sufferings of ethnic minorities to the injustices suffered by the proletariat. Anti-imperialist and disgusted by the atrocities of the wars raging around her, Sissi obsessively dedicates herself to the care of her body, her hairstyle, and the choice of shoes, as a shield against the sense of death looming around her. A prophet of the imminent collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Sissi shows us that world as a paradigm of our world, a present where the wounds of oppression, racism, and war are more virulent than ever. Sissi the Empress is a text where the "cries" of the unfortunate Sissi, an empress against her will but a unique woman, become prominent, and her wounded sensitivity speaks to all of us, to our wounds.
