COPENHAGEN is perhaps the archetype of scientific-themed theater. With its thousand and more performances only between the National Theatre and the West End in the first production in London, and more than three hundred on Broadway, it is a demonstration of how you can fascinate the audience by talking about science even in theater, with apparent simplicity. Copenhagen tells the story of the meeting between Bohr and Heisenberg, two of the greatest physicists of the last century and founders of quantum mechanics, which took place in the midst of World War II. The meeting is considered a historical 'mystery': the two, despite being master and pupil and very close collaborators, belonged to warring nations that were beginning to realize that from apparently only theoretical discoveries decisive weapons could be built. Bohr and Heisenberg never clarified what they had said to each other, and Frayn takes the episode as the basis for a narrative involving three characters that almost seems like a scientific investigation and deals with physics, ethics, and friendship.
