I have freely written the memories of my life; what is good is my merit, and I alone committed the mistakes, so I am responsible for both the good and the bad.
On March 9, the national premiere of the show "Casanova" by David Norisco will debut, and it will then continue on a tour throughout Italy. Alongside Lorenzo Flaherty on stage will be Samanta Chieffallo, Margherita Pelanda, Daniela Savoldi, and Martina Marinelli, with video art by Emanuele Rossi. The direction is by Francesco Branchetti.
“My Casanova,” says director Francesco Branchetti, “is a fresco of a world full of charm and mystery that the charismatic character of Giacomo Casanova brings to life in its fullness. The direction aimed to provide a grand fresco of spectacular intensity through evocative and mysterious images, music with extraordinary impact, and magnetic performances.” A direction that takes the audience on a journey through human passions, love, and the dreamlike and dark side of this controversial and fascinating character, through engaging dreamlike and sensual atmospheres.
The character of Casanova is so strong and unique that only by circling around him can one avoid being annihilated. His memoirs are written in French, but everything refers back to Italian; the vision is typically local even if swept across every part of Europe. He possesses that certainty that the nobles had, relying on their family, social, and economic status; Casanova started out confidently, but soon he found himself lacking funds, an essential and necessary element for living within the dimension of daily luxury. His life was a strenuous chase to plug holes; he had to invent situations each time to avoid difficulties that would shake his reputation as the magical inventor of himself.
Being always smiling, available, cunning, and ready to ride the wave of fortune with a fatigue that would stress a hero. He had nothing behind him, and that little he accumulated he squandered; he was a gambler who played cards, dice, with life and himself. Women well knew he was someone without art or place, so they didn’t take him seriously; they used him for what was needed. He was not a gigolo; if he could, he would lavish gifts on his lovers, making them feel extraordinarily special, and he certainly had other qualities that left indelible marks. He roamed among European courts, met writers, musicians, Enlightenment philosophers, popes, and was a Freemason; in short, he never went unnoticed. When his charm began to fade, he had no other talents to rely on for survival; he accepted a position as a librarian in Duchcov, in a castle between Prague and Vienna, away from international circles, reduced to surviving far from the vibrant world he once inhabited. In reality, this distancing from everything was a way for him to write these memoirs, a unique masterpiece with a broad, rich, and unparalleled vision. No Italian writer has managed to do likewise; Casanova, “beyond all moral,” religious, political, and philosophical context, does not teach us. He writes to help us relive his already extraordinary and unrepeatable journey.
Many have focused their attention on a Casanova imprisoned in the castle of Duchcov, aged, toothless, struggling, but old age comes at the end of a journey, and only the journey captivates; otherwise, one falls into pity, and Casanova deserves much more. The Casanova in this show is the protagonist of his time, who explains, reasons, and presents pieces of the past without judgment or reconsideration, “super partes,” with the distance that time and space have created.
